Rabbi Yechiel Eckstein, late (1951-2019)

The late Rabbi Yechiel Eckstein, who founded the Friendship Foundation in 1983, dedicated his life to building bridges of understanding and cooperation between the Christian world and the State of Israel and the Jewish people.

Rabbi Eckstein, z"l, who was ordained to the rabbinate at Yeshiva University in New York, holds master's degrees from Yeshiva University and Columbia University, where he completed his doctoral studies, and is on the academic staff of Columbia University, the Chicago Technological Seminary, and Northern Baptist Seminary. He also served as a board member of the Joint Organization.

During his years of activity in creating a bridge between the Christian world and the State of Israel and the Jewish people, Rabbi Eckstein has won numerous awards and honors. He was named one of the fifty most influential Jews in the world by the Jerusalem Post, and appeared numerous times on Newsweek magazine's list of the 50 most influential rabbis in the world.

Rabbi Yechiel Eckstein passed away at his home from cardiac arrest on 1 Adar 1, 5779 (February 6, 2019). Many charitable organizations were established in his memory, and many hospital departments across the country were named after him.

The Friendship Foundation is a social organization that assists more than 1,500,000 Israelis in the areas of immigration and absorption, welfare and security, by recruiting support from Christians who love Israel. The organization is currently headed by Yael Eckstein.

The foundation assists in providing a wide range of basic needs and solutions to disadvantaged populations, such as: elderly Holocaust survivors, children and youth at risk, families living in poverty, minorities, and more, in collaboration with hundreds of local authorities, government ministries, hospitals, the IDF, and leading organizations.

The foundation assists hospitals in equipping them with cutting-edge technologies that save lives, improve the quality of care for citizens, and enable the hospitals to continue operating in times of emergency.

Schneider Children's Center provides advanced and innovative pediatric services and is home to world-renowned centers of excellence, including: the Organ Transplantation Unit, the Institute of Gastroenterology, Nutrition and Liver Diseases, the Institute of Endocrinology and Diabetes, the Neurosurgery Unit, the Heart Institute, and the Hematology-Oncology Unit.
