David Azrieli (1922-2014)
David Azrieli founded the Azrieli Foundation and donated most of his fortune to it. In his life and in his death, he commanded the Azrieli Foundation to help others and enable every person to realize their potential.
David Azrieli was born in Poland in 1922, survived the Holocaust, immigrated to Israel, fought in the War of Independence, and moved to Canada in 1954. His career, which began with the modest construction of four duplexes in Montreal in the late 1950s, became a life's work of design, real estate development, and property management, with his unique fingerprint evident in office towers, hotels, and shopping centers in Canada, the United States, and Israel.
David Azrieli's professional success in Canada and Israel reflected his deep love and devotion to both countries. "I have two homelands," he once said, "two places that I love and where I was blessed to do what I love most. My opportunity to express myself professionally was first given to me in Canada. This success also allowed me, over the years, to fulfill the dream of contributing to my second homeland, Israel. The two dreams were always intertwined."
Azrieli was a committed and visionary entrepreneur, businessman, and philanthropist, both personally and through the Foundation, generously supporting initiatives in the fields of education, architecture and design, Holocaust remembrance, people with developmental disabilities, scientific and medical research, and the arts. His understanding of the importance of education was also reflected in his personal journey. In his early years in Canada, he received a bachelor's degree from the University of Montreal, and in 1997, at the age of 75, he received a master's degree in architecture, cum laude, from Carleton University.
Among the awards and honors that David has received in recognition of his many contributions and achievements are the highest civilian honors of the Government of Canada and the Province of Quebec, Honorary Trustee of the City of Jerusalem, and honorary doctorates from Concordia University, Yeshiva University, Carleton University, Tel Aviv University, and the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology and the Weizmann Institute of Science.
David Azrieli passed away in July 2014, surrounded by his family. He was 92 years old at the time of his death.
